I was reading Shonda Rhimes ‘s latest book “The Year of Yes”, and one quote really resonated with me.
“Saying yes . . . saying yes is courage. Saying yes is the sun. Saying yes is life.”
I’m approaching a point in my life where I’m starting to realize you need to take chances and saying yes to different opportunities is the first step to that journey. In her book, Shonda talks about jumping into her writing and then creating well-known primetime gems such as Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Grey’s Anatomy. I mean, how many women do you know who have single handedly owned one entire evening in primetime television? Not that many, I’m sure of it.
What made me relate to her story the most is the fact that she is a private and timid woman who made a decision to step out of her comfort zone to make the “impossible”, possible. On top of that, when you’re in an industry where the boys club is louder than ever, as a minority woman you have to be just as loud if not louder.
For example, my mother has worked in the healthcare industry for over 30 years and being that English is her second language, she has had to work twice as hard to prove that she is exactly where she’s supposed to be. After putting in so much hard work in nursing school and working very long physically taxing hours, she has more than confirmed that fact. She is exactly where she’s supposed to be, without any apologies. Her level of courage is something I hope I’ve inherited in my life; a pillar that any woman in any industry should aspire to have.
Cheers to the industry woman! Your hard work is recognized and very much appreciated. Let’s continue to leave our marks!
